In this episode of Activity Quest, Adam explores the British Museum’s new exhibition, Legion: Life in the Roman Army.
It covers the journey of a Roman soldier from enlistment to retirement, featuring interactive exhibits, Horrible Histories partnerships, and a unique focus on ordinary soldiers!
Highlights include a soldier’s real story and an extraordinary exhibit of a Roman soldier’s remains, discovered in Herculaneum.
The exhibition runs until the 23rd June 2024.
What is Legion: Life in the Roman Army?
This exhibition transports you across the Roman empire, as well as through the life and service of a real Roman soldier, Claudius Terentianus!
Roman military history stretches as far back at the sixth century BC but it wasn’t until the first emperor, Augustus, that being a soldier became a job.
What did life in the Roman army look like from a soldier’s perspective?
What did their families make of life in the fort?
How did the newly-conquered react?
Legion explores life in settled military communities from Scotland to the Red Sea through the people who lived it.
