Japan: Myths to Manga at Young V&A!

12 August - 8 September

Sail and soar through the sky, sea and forest in Young V&A’s first exhibition, Japan: Myths to Manga. Bringing together over 150 historic and contemporary objects, explore Japanese design through folklore and storytelling. Get creative and make your own origami creatures or design your own manga story!

Begin your journey by soaring the skies, joining characters from three popular myths, then plunge into the depths of the sea and learn the magical journeys represented in some of Japan’s most famous artworks, from Hokusai’s Great Wave to the Studio Ghibli film Ponyo.

Next, delve into Japan’s ancient forest and discover mythical stories of shapeshifting creatures and forest-dwelling critters. From The Tale of The Princess Kaguya to Sylvanian Families, discover how our favourite forest animals are often key characters in stories.

Finally, be immersed in manga, anime and video games in the City and learn their history. From Pokemon and Hello Kitty to Tamagotchi, all can be traced back to Japanese folklore!
