We kick things off with the FILMCLUB Film of the Week!
FILMCLUB DVD Film of The Week: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (2011, 12)
Director: Morgan Spurlock
Cast: Morgan Spurlock
Sell, sell, sell – our world is overrun with companies advertising their products through billboards, adverts and TV. Documentary maker Morgan Spurlock turns his camera on advertising to cheekily see if he can make a documentary completely paid for by brands and product placement. But knowing his style will the advertising giants and brand gurus stump up the cash?
An interesting look into how big companies try and advertise their products to you and Morgan Spurlock is very funny in some of the board meetings with big businessmen. A movie that you have to concentrate on, but well worth it!

FILMCLUB Young Ambassador Charlotte was lucky enough to catch up with Morgan Spurlock to ask him about what it was like to make such an unusual film funded in such an unusual way!

Mr Popper’s Penguins (2011, PG)
Director: Mark Waters
Cast: Jim Carrey, Angela Lansbury, Carla Gugino, Ophelia Lovibond, Madeline Carroll
Jim Carrey makes his return to family-friendly movies in this fun tale based on a beloved 1938 children’s book. Mr Popper is divorced and doesn’t see his kids much but he is a successful New York Businessman. This changes when he inherits six penguins from his explorer father. He transforms his expensive apartment into a snowy winter wonderland and finally takes off his work tie and re-learns how fun it can be to be a dad. The penguins are absolutely adorable and are easily the stars of the show, ahead of even Jim Carrey Himself.
This is a great film for families about the importance of family and especially great for animal lovers as the penguins are brilliant – and the CGI and special effects are amazingly realistic. If you enjoy the film, why not check out the book it’s based on by Richard and Florence Atwater.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011, 12)
Director: Rupert Wyatt
Cast: John Lithgow, James Franco, Andy Serkis, Tom Felton, Freida Pinto
This science-fiction thriller is an action packed addition to the series of 70’s films which included the original Planet of the Apes movie. Scientist Will Rodman (James Franco) is testing medicine on baby chimpanzee, Caesar. As an unexpected side effect, Caesar gains a human-like intelligence. The mood changes from excitement to fear as Caesar breaks free and releases the ‘cure’ among thousands of other monkeys, angry about being kept in cages for so long by people.
An amazing film, full of brilliant special effects and clever references to the original films, there is even a leading role for FILMCLUB favourite and Harry Potter star Tom Felton. Some younger children may find some scenes rather scary but it is a brilliant introduction into one of the biggest movie series of all time.

The Three Musketeers (2011, 12)
Director: Paul W.S Anderson
Cast: Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich, Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz
It’s 17th century France and villain Cardinal Richelieu is using his power to start a deadly war against England.
Three warriors (the Three Musketeers) – helped by their unofficial fourth member D’Artagnan – are sent by the Queen to stop the Cardinal’s evil plans. A string of other foes soon appear to test our heroes to their very limit.
The film is all about the special effects and bit stunts with flying boats, martial arts fighting and 3D effects make this an eye-catching and truly bonkers movie which may appeal to boys more than girls. Another film based on an amazing book – Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers was originally published in 1844.

FILMCLUB Young Ambassadors Rebecca and Laura were lucky enough to catch up with the stars of The Three Muskteers including Orlando Bloom and Milla Jovovich and director Paul WS Anderson and asked them about what it was like making such a swashbuckling adventure and how hard it is to learn to sword fight like a Musketeer!
