It sounds silly but one of the best ways to think about towns is to treat them like they’re plants!
After growing a plant for a few weeks, you’ll probably find it’s much bigger and needs more room. To let it grow more, you give it a bigger pot!
That’s sort-of similar to the way towns work. After all, towns really are living, breathing things… They change all the time and react to what we do in them.
By repotting your plant (or maybe even trimming bits off!) you’re thinking about ways to make more space. Sometimes you can take an existing space and make it bigger – villages become towns, towns become cities.
That’s all the work of town planners who design and construct the places we live, work, and play! However, there are rules about building that have to be paid close attention to.
First of all, there are places called brownfield sites.
These are often disused or derelict areas within towns and cities, where perhaps a factory or other buildings once stood.
Then there’s greenfield sites which is land that’s never been built on. Greenfield is totally different to green belt though.
Green belt is protected land – it’s not normally possible to build on it because it’s a way to conserve the countryside around cities.
With all of these rules, you might think town planning is a tough job!
It’s not easy but town planners are always looking ahead, seeing where the demand is likely to be so that they can plan for new places to be built in time.
