Avionics: Fact File!

Avionics is all about the electronics – the electrical devices connected with aviation.

We think of planes being run on fuel but that’s not the only power they need.  The controls and computers in the cockpits will be connected by electrical circuits. Some help fly the plane, others are for navigation and some run the communication equipment that helps the pilot speak to the passengers and the ground crew.

Planes also need electricity to power the lighting inside the cabin and external navigational lights, the air-con and heating, and to run the cookers that warm up the meals and boil the kettles!  The fuel powered jet engines make some of this electricity, but before the engines have started a machine called an APU provides power to get things going.
