What was The Blitz?
It all started on 3rd September 1939 when Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announced that the country was at war with Germany.
That’s when World War Two started, it lasted 6 years and claimed a lot of lives.
The enemy would fly planes over England and bomb places. London got the worst of these bombing in England.
The Blitz is the name given to the 7 month period in which the bombs were the worst in London.
How bad was the Blitz?
It was pretty bad for the people of London.
One night, on 29th December 1940, it was so destructive, it became known as the SECOND Great Fire of London.
What was it like to live in London then?
It was quite dangerous which is why a lot of the children in London were evacuated away to live with people in the country where there was less chance of bombings happening.
The people who were left in London had to br prepared for when a bombing of London might happen.
Families built shelters in their gardens to protect themselves from air raids (that’s what you call a bombing by planes).
Communal air raid shelters were also built across London, and underground stations were also used to keep people safe while an air raid was happening.
