Dan and Bex are coming to the end of their road trip. They’ve come a long way and are wondering what lies ahead!
Just like Dan and Bex, engineers use their imaginations to think about the future of roads- and it’s possible the world will be a more COLOURFUL place – especially around homes, hospitals and schools.
Roads outside schools can be dangerous, with pedestrians crossing the road and drivers looking for places to park.
In Essex families are encouraged to Park and Stride – parking safely away from the school and walking in together.
In the future, roads around schools could have colourful designs to make drivers feel as if they’re driving in the playground – encouraging them to be more careful.
Engineers are also working on flexible pavements which could grow and shrink at different times of the day, say exposing cycle paths in the morning and perhaps wider roads for cars during rush-hour.
Roads could even turn into parks at quiet times creating “parklets” with artificial grass and pop up seating – something that’s already trialled in London.
