1. Pencils have been around for over 450 years.

The first pencils were made in the 16th century, after a large deposit of graphite was discovered in England.

People started wrapping sticks of graphite in string to keep their hands clean, which eventually led to the invention of the wooden pencil.

2. Pencils don’t actually contain lead.

Even though we often call it a “lead pencil,” the inside is made of graphite, not lead.

People used to think graphite was a form of lead, so the name stuck, but it’s completely safe and non-toxic!

3. A pencil can write 45,000 words!

If you never had to sharpen it, a typical pencil could draw a line about 35 miles long or write around 45,000 words.

That’s like writing the entire small book with just one pencil!

4. Pencils are made using cedar wood.

Most pencils are made from cedar wood, which is strong, lightweight, and has a pleasant smell.

The wood is cut into thin slats, grooves are carved out for the graphite, and then two slats are glued together to make the pencil’s body.

5. Pencils can write underwater!

Unlike pens, pencils can write in zero gravity, underwater, and even in extreme temperatures.

That’s why astronauts, divers, and mountaineers often use pencils in challenging conditions.

6. There are lots of steps involved to make a pencil.

Making a pencil is a complex process that involves more than 80 different steps!

From cutting the wood and shaping the graphite to painting and sharpening, each step ensures the pencil is perfectly crafted for writing.

7. The eraser was invented by accident.

Before erasers, people used breadcrumbs to erase mistakes!

The modern eraser was discovered by accident in 1770 when an Englishman, Edward Nairne, picked up a piece of rubber instead of breadcrumbs and found it worked even better.

8. Pencils can be made without wood!

While most pencils are made with wooden casings, there are also eco-friendly pencils made from recycled materials, like newspaper, plastic, or even old denim!

These pencils work just as well as traditional ones but are better for the environment.

9. The world’s largest pencil weighs over 18,000 pounds!

This massive pencil measured in at 23.23 m (76 ft 2.75 in) and weighed 98.43 tonnes (21,700 lb)!

It was created in New York in 2007 and is a huge replica of a regular yellow pencil, complete with an eraser.

10. There are over 14 billion pencils made every year.

Pencils are still incredibly popular, with over 14 billion pencils produced globally each year.

That’s enough to circle the Earth over 60 times if you lined them up end-to-end!
